Frankly you can find mittens in a variety of types of materials that provide insulation and waterproofing, and if you are looking for the best materials be sure to purchase those that have secured seams and use highly specialized materials. Some materials include things like Ventia and Cordura Ventia, DWR polyester, and even treated leather. A lot of synthetics will be a lot more expensive, the higher cost synthetic mittens will last for a much longer time then the cheaper variations.
After you find a set of water proof mittens you'll want to begin looking at the mittens insulation. Be sure that they feel decent on your hand and you are comfortable with the way they feel. A lot of the main insulation used in mittens use high quality synthetic mittens, and with due reason. Fleece is a very lightweight material with one of the benefits being that within a few minutes a wet mitten can become dry. Synthetics are the most common type of insulation material, such as microfleece, polar fleece, and advanced thermal materials. If you happen to dislike synthetic materials I'd recommend checking out wool. Wool is a fantastic medium for trapping heat, but keep in mind their downfall is with drying.
